Clean Ocean Businesses protect the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary through practices that keep pollutants away from both storm drains and the sewer system.

Our History
The Clean Ocean Business Program was started by the City of Santa Cruz, Environmental Compliance Department to recognize businesses that are in compliance with the City's mandatory BMPs (Best Management Practices) by reducing water pollution from auto repair shops, other types of vehicle service facilities, and food service facilities. The award-winning efforts of these businesses have protected the San Lorenzo River, the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary and local creeks for over 20 years through practices that keep pollutants away from both storm drains and the sewer system.
Our Growth
The City of Santa Cruz now recognizes over 300 Clean Ocean Business awardees and 48 have been recipients since the City program began 21 years ago. In 2022 CleanOceanBusinsess.com, created an online community business platform to actively support, promote and advertise businesses known for their excellence and who have earned the “Clean Ocean Business Award”.
Ultimate Goal
To continue offering a welcoming, supportive, engaging online platform for Clean Ocean Businesses and our Communities to interface, grow business, grow community and find each other. To help expand the City of Santa Cruz’s Environmental Compliance Program and Award Certification Status.
